In addition to endogenous factors, several environmental factors contribute to this process and sometimes accelerate aging. Therefore, numerous researches within the dermatological science and above all in dermato-endocrinology have the aim of developing drugs <strong>anti aging<\/strong> effective and one of the very promising candidates is melatonin.<\/p>\n<p>Several studies have revealed that melatonin with its forte <strong>antioxidant action<\/strong> shows a<br \/>\nbroad spectrum of action as a bioregulatory molecule with pluripotent and essential protective effects in many cells, tissues and other compartments of animals, humans and even plants. [147] One of the predominant properties of melatonin is its potent cyto-protective activity at both physiological and pharmacological concentrations. [147]<\/p>\n<p>As for the clinical application, exogenous melatonin should be used for<strong> topically<\/strong> rather than orally, as this route leads to rather low blood levels due to a strong first pass effect in the liver, thus limiting access to the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Topical application could be significant, since melatonin can penetrate the <strong>stratum corneum<\/strong> and constitute a deposit due to its particular lipophilic structure.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the endogenous production of intracutaneous melatonin, together with topically applied exogenous melatonin or its metabolites may represent one of the most potent antioxidant defense systems against UV-induced skin aging.
